Spade bits are the fast, inexpensive option for wide holes in timber where finish quality is not critical: running conduit through blocking, clearing a path for hardware, roughing out a mortise before you clean it up with a chisel.

They cut quickly, cost a fraction of an auger, and are cheap enough to treat as consumable, which matters when you are drilling wet treated lumber full of grit.
