One end of the rod gets secured to the wall and the other gets anchored to a stable structure, such as a concrete deadman, that is anchored beneath the ground with sufficient resistance. The tieback\/deadman system resists forces, such as backfilled soils plus rainwater, that would otherwise cause the wall to lean.
